about memories...

I wrote this poem a while ago. It's about my brother, inspired by this photograph.

I really would like to see this poem published, it would make my whole world.

Carousel

There is a photograph of us, taken
when we were children with sticky chins
and round eyes full of stories rich
like chocolate éclairs, fluffy
with the sweetest cream,
in our darling outfits, red and blue with stars,
orange soda can in my tiny hand,
candy fluff stuck to your little boy fingers,
at some festival before our turn
to ride the colorful horses

A curious girl full of questions,
I asked our mother if I could
rewind and fast forward
in my mind the way our then new
video recorder played back pictures.
She told me about memories
and how they are felt, how they live
in every smell and sound.
Now I see them as water
rolling in, around and
through my mind until
they freeze and fill in with time.

I picture you, still
little boy face on a man
in uniform, gun in hand
with grim look, dusty
and dirty in a land
I’ve never been to and
I can’t understand
muddy grit that fills
your old soul eyes and
shows hollows below.
That heavy look pulls
and twists me inside.
The feeling lulls
in the morning time
when the blender of ice
spins, shatters and slows.

the art of pregnancy

I had seen these photo montages chronicling pregnancy and I knew if I ever got pregnant I so wanted to do it...so I did! Unfortunately the first twelve weeks I was very sick and did not have a great urge to try to look decent and document my journey. I could barely get off the couch and make it in to work or really do much of anything. By about fourteen weeks I was feeling much better and started this process.

I am not much of a photographer, hence the varying lighting, sometimes fuzzy shots and various distance issues but I thought for a final product these turned out incredible! In addition to the first thirteen weeks I missed a week here and there but you get the picture, heehee!

Scrolling through these again is so interesting to me, watching my body grow and change, seeing the joy on my face as well as some of the more tired moments. Those honestly weren't captured too much because those were typically the weeks I missed out photographing.

I have a chalkboard wall in my art room so that is the back drop. I set up a camera on a stack of books on a ladder and used the ten second timer to go back to my place by the wall and snap a picture. The bigger I got the slower I moved so some of those last few weeks took many, many attempts to get a decent shot.

I am really proud of this project, the art of creation. I was kicking myself a bit for not doing any art work for many months until I looked at all of these photographs together. This was my art and I am very, very proud and happy. Thanks to everyone on facebook for sharing this journey as well, these pictures probably look familiar to everyone who put up with seeing my belly grow in my profile pic each week. I appreciate all of the love you shared with me, helping me see the beauty when sometimes I did not feel so beautiful with the physical changes. Your lovely comments meant a lot.

A big thanks and credit to Cassie Rosch who took the final picture with me and Oliver during our newborn session two weeks after his birth. Check out her site, she is an exceptional photographer and captures the most beautiful moments in her work.

ps. I laugh at myself now because at 21 weeks I thought I was huge, little did I know what huge was going to mean...

And these are some outtakes! Mainly with my sweet dog Cooper who always wants to be a part of the action.

spring time fun

A few weeks ago Jenn came into town for a spa weekend. We only see each other maybe once or twice a year (we have been a lot better about that which has been great) so it was fun to get away and enjoy...

cupcakes, tech storage drive, more cupcakes, room service (angel food cake french toast, um yes please) the superb acting of J-Love, a "couples" massage, cute stuff at even cuter stores ( I bought a turtle plate!) the beauty of Boulder CO, orchids and bath salts (not those zombie face eating kinds), very cute maxi dresses (we never took a picture!) and a whole lot of driving courtesy of Jenn and her trusty GPS. ( I hate driving and I miss Jenn's big red truck too)

Thank you Jenn, for making the trip out here. It was so much fun and I always enjoy spending time with this wonderful person/art soul-sister I used to live with :-) I was lucky enough to travel the very next weekend to spend Jenn's 30th birthday with her. I wish I had some pictures of the absolutely gorgeous party she put together. It was lovely!

Here is the evidence of our trek around beautiful Colorado...

history

Do you ever look at the things around you and think about what they have been through?

I have had many moments in packing and unpacking boxes where I really take a look at the objects I am wrapping and unwrapping, placing and replacing, forgetting and remembering again and again.

In my history I have moved. A lot. I mean, seriously A LOT. The packing and unpacking of boxes stays with me.

My dad was in the air force so being a military family, we moved every couple of years.

I'm conflicted.

I was able to live all over the world and all over this country too and I am really grateful for that. I think this history has helped shape me as a person, as an artist, as someone who is truly comfortable with change which is really helpful in an ever-changing world and life. I have seen a lot, more than a lot, more than most people can dream of and I would never give it back.

I'm also sad sometimes. I'm sad I was never able to really put down roots. I'm sad for great friendships come and gone because distance and time proved too much. I'm sad to get the delicious flavor of something but to have the cake taken away from me before I've finished even once slice.

Oh, but the art...the art...it's such a plus. I have seen a lot of art.

Maybe it's why I love all things artistic so much?

My mom was great with me and my brother; she really helped us experience the various cultures we lived in by taking us to so many different places. She had a lot of time with us while my dad was working and she made the most of it, making sure we did as well.

I have seen Aborigine's dot painting.

I have seen beautiful dragons in Japanese Festivals.

I have been within fingertips reach of the great masterworks of our art world.

I have seen so much...

The art that exists within my packed up boxes and inside my heart is something else I would never give back.

This little snips from above are from my drawing board. I have had this drawing board since I was a freshman in college so its lifetime with me has been twelve years so far.

When I thought about this post I went searching for my drawing board...I couldn't find it anywhere until I remembered I had stashed it in our garage after we moved into our house. I had no idea just how much "history" existed on the board until I took it out to photograph. Pieces of paper, charcoal, ink, tape, paint and most likely many tears have washed over this board.

It's a beautiful part of both my art and personal history and I can't wait to add some more to the story.

motivation

from now on this is what I will see every day when I come down the stairs...

it's a good reminder don't you think?

Thank you Jenn :-) Now I can carry it wherever life takes me...

it's been a little rough

The new year high kind of wore off quickly. Immediate exhaustion set in, too much work, not enough time and when there is time...just so tired.

so tired.

stuck in my head again and searching so hard and deep for my heart. I know the answers sit in there somewhere just waiting to shake me awake.

one thing that stuck with me the first week of the new year was my resolution to laugh more. I did laugh more and I know because I thought about that resolution every time I laugh.

suddenly there was sadness and sadness tends to stay with me. Maybe it's the Pisces in me that absorbs emotion like water in my gills, I'm not sure. All I know is when there is heightened emotion it weighs on me for a while.

for now I am focusing on the things that have made me smile lately...or feel something outside of myself. Is that even possible?

I do love this video:

we started our memory jar for the year...I saw the idea on pinterest and wanted to try it. You write down memories and funny stuff or whatever you want throughout the year and then read everything aloud on new years eve.

I keep looking at these beautiful decals Jenn sent me for Christmas...I know exactly where they will go in my art room so Jeff just needs to hang them up since I am not allowed to touch the walls :-)

a thousand years later I finally stretched "Jalaine" from my women's series. Now she can actually hang it up!

I took a break from reading about research and writing to paint this frame a rough green. I am in love with it.

A in a frame and it makes me smile.
Jeff's Dad and his sweet Grandmother as she looks at photographs of her family. She is the sweetest and funniest, saw a very young David Bowie on PBS and said "who is that woman?"

This is something that made me cry and smile...cry for the powerful words and memories of Veterans and also smile that my brother is able to have some creative outlet for his own experience. To learn more about Warrior Writers or to purchase a copy of the collection check out the website.

and of course when all else fails...who always makes me smile?
